Celanese Formalizes Water Policy to Support Sustainable Management of Water Resources
Celanese recognizes that water is a vital raw material for our business and a shared natural resource. Water is essential for life and access to safe water and sanitation is a basic human right. Water is needed to support our direct manufacturing operation including for cooling water system, steam generation, washing, and in products. Integrating water issues at the product development and operational levels is an ongoing and continuous process. As a responsible community partner, and in line with our vision to improve the world and everyday living, we are committed to sustainable water management practices.
We have formalized a water policy to support sustainable management of water resources where we source raw materials and where our facilities are located. “This policy forms the foundation for continued development of our global water management program which strives to increase water efficiency and support sustainable water management practices especially in manufacturing operations,” said Chris Hylemon, senior principal environmental engineer and water program leader.
As part of our longer-term environmental goals, we have established a target to reduce water consumption intensity by 10% by 2030 from a 2021 baseline. Learn more about our progress in our 2020-2021 Sustainability Report.

In addition to adopting this policy, our recent water management progress includes:
- Integrating water management metrics tracking into the global ESG data management system;
- Forming a water stewardship committee to guide the water risk assessment process, provide water management guidance, and support integration of water risk into the Enterprise Risk Management process; and
- Completing our first CDP Water Security Survey.
Suppliers and joint venture companies are encouraged to follow this policy.
